WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE ODYSSEY JR/SR CAMPUS?

Socratic Discussion

Mrs. Theodore-Pharel hosted a Socratic discussion this week in her 8th-grade classes, comparing the novel Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson to the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

The novel chronicles how an epidemic of fever swept through the streets of Philadelphia in 1793. Students engaged in real-life comparisons between the historical fiction in the novel and their own experiences during the pandemic. The Socratic method, named for the philosopher Socrates, is considered one of the highest orders of thinking.

Thank you, Mrs. Theodore-Pharel, for allowing
our scholars to think like philosophers!

Middle School Social Studies

Ms. Beauchamp's class finished the 13 colonies section.  The students had to create their own colony, based on colonial times.  The colony could be anywhere, as long as they followed the guidelines for creation.  Some students even had a backstory, saying they were in one colony and wanted to move for religious or economic reasons.

Special Guest Speaker in AVID Class

Ms. Scardino's AVID class had a special guest speaker on Friday, November 17th.  Mr. Davis, the Site Administrator, spoke to students about his passion for education and the steps he took to get here.

In true Titan fashion, Mr. Davis wore his new Titan Merch for the presentation.  He told students about his education and earlier career before coming to Odyssey in 2012.  He started with a sociology degree and was afforded the opportunity to teach.  He loved it so much that he went back for his certification.  He was the Dean of Students for Odyssey Charter School and the Assistant Principal for Odyssey Preparatory Academy before becoming the Site Administrator for Jr/Sr.

Mr. Davis talked about the different career opportunities available in education and the criteria for becoming certified. He also spoke about careers in administration.  Students appreciated getting to know more about Mr. Davis.

Anatomy Class

Dr. Caleb's Anatomy Class examined the external features of the heart, orienting the heart in the anterior position locating the apex and left ventricle closest to the apex and the right ventricle over the sulcus. Students also located the auricles and used straws to locate the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary vein, and brachiocephalic artery. The students will also dissect the heart and examine the internal anatomy.

School Visit by the U.S. Navy to Explore Nuclear Power and Careers in the Navy

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, Officers Christopher Franchy and Sean Yarnall visited the classes of Mr. Zelonski, Dr. Grimaldi, and Dr. Caleb respectively. The Navy personnel spoke to the fact that the Navy is not just about patrolling the seas and defending nations; it offers exciting career opportunities in various fields.

Navy school visits are an extraordinary opportunity for students to gain insight into the world of Nuclear Power Engineering and careers in the Navy. Exploring the possibilities offered by a Navy career, particularly in the field of Nuclear Power, can open doors to a fulfilling and impactful professional journey. The Navy offers exciting challenges and experiences and provides the tools, training, and benefits necessary for personal and professional growth. So, are you ready to embrace the unique opportunities that a Navy career in Nuclear Power can bring?
